The ancient Greek philosophy of a sound mind in a healthy body got itself another modern boost recently when the Shoreline Conference honored some of its top young men and women from the combined world of athletics and academics at the 18th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony.

The event, which has been sponsored by Shore Line Newspapers since its inception, features the very best of both worlds. Not only does an individual have to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better on a scale of 4.0 (ie, 87.5 out of 100, or a high B average), but he or she must also be first team all-conference or first team all-state. The athlete must be at least a sophomore, have no failing grades for the academic period in which he or she is honored as all-conference and must be of good standing in the community.

Making it once is quite an achievement, but this year it was even better for some young people.

This year 10 seniors were honored for the third consecutive year. Three-year recipients of the Scholar-Athlete Award are Natalie Galgano (North Branford), Raeann Groves (Lyme-Old Lyme), Isabel Hirsch (Coginchaug), Katie Lawrence (Lyme-Old Lyme), Jessica Mullaney (Haddam-Killingworth), Lisa Russell (Lyme-Old Lyme), David Rutty (Westbrook), Peter Rynkowski (Haddam-Killingworth) Jenna Skaar (Lyme-Old Lyme) and Lilly Spratt (Lyme-Old Lyme).
