Softball Recap: Athens Warriors vs. Auburn Trojans

Athens was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They lost 12-1 to the Auburn Trojans. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Athens of the 1-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

Athens saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Preslie Buckmaster, who went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

On Auburn's side, Meena Taylor was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and only two hits while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Taylor has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive pitching appearances. Taylor was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and a double.

In other batting news, Addison Wheatley was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and a double. Piper Taylor was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

Athens' loss dropped their record down to 9-12. As for Auburn, they have been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 20-6-1 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will take on Hartsburg-Emden at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Athens is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season. As for Auburn, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Olympia at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Olympia will roll in looking for their 16th straight victory, something Auburn surely won't give up without a fight.
