Softball Recap: Sweeny Gets the Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against El Campo, Sweeny was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They never let the Bay City Blackcats get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Selene Bass and Christina Martinez made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Bass pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Martinez tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. At the plate, Bass went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Martinez went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Anaiah Flores was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Mckenna Poehl, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Sweeny kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.1 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 10.

The win got Sweeny back to even at 8-8. As for Bay City, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-11.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sweeny will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Columbia at 6:00 p.m. on the 31st. As for Bay City, they will take on El Campo at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blackcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Ricebirds have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
