Baseball Recap: Seventy-First Comes Up Short

Seventy-First had lost four straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 8-11 to make it five. They lost 12-2 to the Westover Wolverines. The Falcons were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wolverines earlier this season, when they won 7-3.

Charles Gunnings Jr and Armand Mathewson did some serious damage despite the final result: Gunnings Jr went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one double, while Mathewson went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That triple was Gunnings Jr's first of the season.

As for Westover, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-7. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by ten runs or more this season.

On Westover's side, they got a big performance out of Anthony Edwards, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one double. The Wolverines are 3-1 when Edwards posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Marquis Cobb, who got on base in three of his seven plate appearances with five stolen bases.

While Seventy-First had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
