Volleyball Recap: Ilija Wenz's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Rome Free Academy over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill

Rome Free Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils. The Black Knights were not able to make up for their defeat to the Red Devils from their previous meeting back in February of 2024.

Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 25-27, 25-13, 25-19.

Rome Free Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ilija Wenz, who had 18 kills, 11 digs, three blocks, and two aces. Wenz is crushing it when it comes to kills: he's had at least five every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Elijah Pomales, who had nine digs, three aces, and one block.

Nolan Wood had a dynamite game for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, getting 37 assists and six digs.

Rome Free Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.

Rome Free Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 3-1 win against Little Falls on the 23rd. As for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 3-2 victory against Proctor on the 23rd.
