Baseball Recap: Southwest Edgecombe Wins Going Away Against Washington

SouthWest Edgecombe had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt Washington on Thursday. The Cougars were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Pam Pack. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 26, 2023, but that streak is no more.

Jaelyn McLean was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Logan Bell, who went 1-for-4 with four RBI and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Tyson Ayers was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs.

SouthWest Edgecombe always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Washington only posted an OBP of .321.

SouthWest Edgecombe's record now sits at 12-4. As for Washington, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-10 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. SouthWest Edgecombe will be taking part in a tournament against Faith Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Cougars 3.2, the Patriots 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Washington, they will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Ayden - Grifton at 7:00 p.m. on the 29th.
