Baseball Recap: Benton's Luck Changes for the Better on Friday

Benton came into Friday's match having lost 12 straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 10-6 win over the Frankfort Redbirds on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Rangers: when they faced off against the Redbirds two weeks ago, they had to take a 4-3 loss.

Peyton Robinson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kyle Thomas, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Grant Owens, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Benton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.

Benton's victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 5-16. As for Frankfort, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-14 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Benton will head out to square off against Pinckneyville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Rangers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season. As for Frankfort, they will venture away from home to face off against Lawrenceville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
