Softball Game Preview: York Cougars vs. East Rutherford Cavaliers

The York Cougars will face off against the East Rutherford Cavaliers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

York will bounce into Monday's match after beating Clover, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Cougars were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Blue Eagles last Tuesday. The win was nothing new for the Cougars as they're now sitting on ten straight.

Layla Clayton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on seven hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, York's victory was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Peyton Brooks, who went 3-for-5 with one home run and two RBI. Another was Alyvia Lingerfelt, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: York kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 11 consecutive games.

Meanwhile, East Rutherford entered their tilt with Hendersonville on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Bearcats 13-5.

York pushed their record up to 15-3 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games. As for East Rutherford, their win bumped their record up to 11-7.

Everything went York's way against East Rutherford in their previous matchup on April 9th, as York made off with a 9-1 victory. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Cavaliers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
