Softball Recap: Great Bend Wins High-Profile Match Against Liberal

Great Bend faced Liberal in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Panthers walked away with a 10-6 win over the Redskins. The victory was familiar territory for the Panthers, who have now won five games in a row.

Chayla Prendergast spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, Katherine Mazouch was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa McCauley, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

Mazouch wasn't the only one making solid contact: Great Bend kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Great Bend pushed their record up to 10-1 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Liberal, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Great Bend will host Dodge City at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Demons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.71 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Liberal, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Cimarron at 4:00 p.m. on May 1.
