Softball Recap: Sacred Heart-Griffin Snaps Four-Game Streak of Losses at Home

Sacred Heart-Griffin had lost four games at home, but after bumping their record up to 5-6 on Wednesday that streak is in the rearview. They came out on top against the Springfield Senators by a score of 2-1 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). This was a revenge game for the Cyclones: when they faced off against the Senators last Thursday, they had to take a 2-1 loss.

Kenzie Wieland made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 18 over eight innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than ten strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Wieland wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Addie Malek, who went 1-for-3 with one triple. Lucy Wegner also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.

As for Springfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-3. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

On Springfield's side, Mia Volpert spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up nine Ks.

Coming up, Sacred Heart-Griffin will take on Carlinville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Cyclones 4, the Cavaliers 2.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Springfield, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against North Mac at 4:30 p.m.
