Preview: Newcomb Skyhawks vs. Grants Pirates
The Newcomb Skyhawks will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Grants Pirates at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Newcomb is ranked 89th, while Grants is ranked 112th).
Last Thursday, Newcomb suffered a tough 53-30 defeat at the hands of Bloomfield. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Newcomb in their matchups with Bloomfield: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the defeat, Newcomb saw an underclassman step up: Jazlyn Begay scored 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nevaeh Miller, who scored six points.
Meanwhile, Grants ended up a good deal behind Magdalena on Saturday and lost 51-33. Grants has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Newcomb now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Grants, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-8 record this season.
Newcomb was taken down by Grants 54-15 when the teams last played back in December of 2021. Can Newcomb avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
