Baseball Recap: Carrick Finds Home Field Redemption Against Penn Hills

There's no place like home for Carrick, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Penn Hills Indians on Monday as they made off with a 14-4 win. This was payback for the Raiders, who suffered a 6-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Eli Wittmann was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Carrick is 3-1 when Wittmann allows one or fewer hits, but 3-5 otherwise. Wittmann was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Riley Mares and Luzay Watson did most of the damage at the plate: Mares got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Watson went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Watson is becoming a predictor of Carrick's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-6 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Kelly Maxwell, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Carrick kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory got Carrick back to even at 6-6. As for Penn Hills, they are on a 17-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-14.

Coming up, Carrick will square off against Westinghouse at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Penn Hills, they will face off against Woodland Hills at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
