Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school girls basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Trinity Turner of
Dr. Phillips (Orlando) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Florida High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-8 junior point guard led the Panthers to a 30-1 record and their second straight Class 7A state championship.
Turner averaged 19.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 4.6 steals per game, scoring in double figures in all but two games. In an 80-64 win over powerhouse Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) in January, she poured in a season-high 34 points.
Against Winter Haven in the state title game, Turner scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half of the 47-43 victory to help Dr. Phillips repeat as champions.
Nyla Harris of Lake Highland Prep was the 2021-22 MaxPreps Florida Player of the Year. The current Louisville freshman averaged 17.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game last season to lead the Highlanders to the Class 4A state title.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in April. Past selections include 2022 WNBA Most Valuable Player A'ja Wilson (2014) as well as 2022 All-WNBA picks Skylar Diggins-Smith (2009), Sabrina Ionescu (2016), Jonquel Jones (2012), Nneka Ogwumike (2008), Kelsey Plum (2013), Breanna Stewart (2012) and Alyssa Thomas (2010).
