Baseball Recap: Mayfield Takes a Loss

Mayfield fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Jackson on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Polar Bears by a score of 2-1. The Wildcats' defeat continues a trend for the team, making it four in a row.

Christophe Alexander was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.

In other pitching news, Mayfield got a good showing from Dom Prince, who tossed 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Prince has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

Alexander wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was JD Sega, who went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases.

Mayfield's record now sits at 4-10. As for Jackson, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 12-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mayfield will face off against Riverside at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Beavers have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season. As for Jackson, they will challenge North Royalton at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
