Volleyball Recap: Lamar Consolidated Comes Up Short

After flying high against Tomas on Friday, Lamar Consolidated came back down to earth. The Mustangs fell just short of the Fort Bend Kempner Cougars by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-1 back in September.

While Lamar Consolidated ultimately came up short, they really made Fort Bend Kempner work, particularly in the first set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 27-25, 10-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-6.

Julieann Zepeda paced Lamar Consolidated's offense, picking up 13 kills. Zepeda got some help from Alexa Perez and her 23 assists. Zepeda also made an impact serving: she shared the team lead in aces with Julissa Zepeda, each putting up six.

Fort Bend Kempner found their leader in freshman Maylin Gutierrez, who had 17 digs and one assist. Those 17 digs set a new season-high mark for Gutierrez.

The defeat snapped Lamar Consolidated's winning streak at three matches and leaves them with a 19-8 record. As for Fort Bend Kempner, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 13-19.

Lamar Consolidated has already played their next match, a 3-0 loss against Randle on the 17th. As for Fort Bend Kempner, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-1 win against Tomas on the 17th.
