Basketball Recap: Wayne Takes a Loss

Wayne entered their contest against Ironton on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Wayne Pioneers took a 74-66 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ironton Fighting Tigers. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Pioneers came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 27th in West Virginia, while the Fighting Tigers are ranked 105th in Ohio).

When it comes to explaining why Wayne lost, don't look at Isaac Meddings. Despite the final result, he went 7 for 17 en route to 27 points and five assists. Meddings' afternoon made it nine games in a row in which he has scored at least 21 points. Ronnie Staley was another key player, going 5 of 8 on his way to 13 points in addition to six assists and six rebounds.

Ironton got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Braden Schreck out in front who went 11 for 21 to rack up 26 points along with seven assists and six boards. Another player making a difference was Markel Cotton, who went 7 of 12 en route to 16 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

The defeat was their first at home , dropping their record down to 9-3. As for Ironton, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-5.

Wayne didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 65-40 win against Point Pleasant on the 4th. As for Ironton, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 67-61 loss against Chesapeake on the 4th.
