Football Recap: San Gabriel Takes a Loss

San Gabriel was the 41-7 winner over Montebello when they last played one another back in November of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Matadors lost to the Oilers at home by a 54-36 margin on Thursday. Matadors fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team has lost against the Oilers since Thursday.

Ricky Garcia threw for 239 yards and one TD. Noah Osorio was his top target, picking up 73 receiving yards. On the ground, Louie Navarro rushed for 176 yards and four scores while picking up 7.7 yards per carry.

Leading Montebello to victory were Donovan Murillo and Joe Curiel. Murillo gained 229 total yards and three touchdowns, while Curiel threw for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 17 passes. Curiel's passing game has become a key predictor of the Oilers' success: the team is 3-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-5 otherwise.

San Gabriel's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Montebello, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 4-6.

San Gabriel does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Montebello, they will face off against Rancho Alamitos at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th.
