Basketball Game Preview: Rock Canyon Jaguars vs. Doherty Spartans

Rock Canyon is 0-3 against Doherty since December of 2014 but things could change on Saturday. The Rock Canyon Jaguars will square off against the Doherty Spartans at 7:00 p.m. Rock Canyon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.4 points per game this season.

Rock Canyon fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Regis Jesuit on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Raiders by a score of 56-54. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Jaguars have suffered since December 8, 2023.

Despite the defeat, Rock Canyon got top-tier performance from Alyssa Goode, who on her way to 23 points along with five boards and four steals. The dominant performance also gave Goode a new career-high in shooting accuracy (89%). Another player making a difference was Brooke Harding, who posted 11 points and three blocks.

Meanwhile, Doherty faced Pine Creek in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. Doherty took a blow against Pine Creek, falling 66-35. The Spartans were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-16.

Rock Canyon will need to focus on slowing down Cora Wheaton, one of several Doherty players who made an impact when they last played. She had ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Payton Cordova, who put up six points.

Doherty's loss dropped their record down to 17-6. As for Rock Canyon, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-9.

Rock Canyon and Doherty were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in January, but Rock Canyon came up empty-handed after a 48-47 loss. Can Rock Canyon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
