Eaton has gone 4-0 against Fort Morgan recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Eaton Reds will square off against the Fort Morgan Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. Both are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Eaton is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Highland: they outscored them in every quarter. Eaton was the clear victor by a 57-36 margin over Highland on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Reds.
Eaton found their leader in sophomore Courtney Steinkamp, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 15 rebounds. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Steinkamp has scored at least a third of Eaton's points. Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Fort Morgan). They simply couldn't be stopped on Saturday as they easily beat Prospect Ridge Academy 65-19. The win was familiar territory for the Mustangs who have now won three matches in a row.
Fort Morgan found their leader in sophomore Ava Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Taylor is becoming a predictor of Fort Morgan's success: when she posts at least eight boards the team is 3-1 (and 1-3 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Coffin, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 13 points and five steals.
Fort Morgan's victory ended a 12-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-4. As for Eaton, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Eaton has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 31.7 boards per game. However, it's not like Fort Morgan struggles in that department as they've been averaging 41.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Eaton against Fort Morgan in their previous meeting back in November of 2023, as the squad secured a 58-14 win. In that game, Eaton amassed a halftime lead of 36-4, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Thursday.
