Football Recap: Maxwell Comes Up Short

Maxwell suffered their closest loss since October 4, 2024 on Friday. They fell just short of the Mullen Broncos by a score of 34-32. The Wildcats gained 97 more yards on the day, but it was the Broncos that made the best use of them.

Despite the loss, Maxwell still got an impressive performance from Jesse Reyes, who rushed for 125 yards and three TDs, and also threw for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 77.8% of his passes. Reyes is crushing it when it comes to rushing touchdowns: he's punched in at least two every time he's taken the field this season. Maxwell's leading receiver Jagger Kleewein was Reyes' top target yet again, picking up 126 receiving yards and one score.

Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 3.5 yards per carry. The team can thank Jahven Reyes for the heroic effort on defense: he. Maxwell's ground attack was stronger, having averaged five.

Mullen's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alex Werner, who picked up 63 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 106 yards and one TD. Brandon Hardin was another key player, gaining 149 total yards and a touchdown.

This is the second loss in a row for Maxwell and nudges their season record down to 3-3. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 3-2 Sandhills/Thedford (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 80% over those games). As for Mullen, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 6-0.
