Football Recap: Maxwell Comes Up Short

Maxwell came into this matchup off a tough 24-point loss last Thursday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Mullen Broncos by a score of 34-32 on Friday. The Wildcats were not able to make up for their defeat to the Broncos from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Maxwell lost, don't look at Jesse Reyes. Despite the final result, he rushed for 125 yards and three scores, and also threw for 237 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 77.8% of his passes. Reyes is crushing it when it comes to rushing touchdowns: he's punched in at least two every time he's taken the field this season. 126 of Reyes' passing yards were hauled in by Jagger Kleewein, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mullen to victory, but perhaps none more so than Alex Werner, who picked up 63 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 106 yards and one TD. Another player making a difference was Brandon Hardin, who gained 149 total yards and a touchdown.

This is the second loss in a row for Maxwell and nudges their season record down to 3-3. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 3-2 Sandhills/Thedford (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 80% over those games). As for Mullen, they pushed their record up to 6-0 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Maxwell will host Bayard at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Mullen, they will be playing at home against Sandhills/Thedford at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Broncos will need to watch out since the Knights have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.
