Basketball Recap: Ben Werner's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mullen over Anselmo-Merna

Mullen was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 48-45 heartbreaker at the hands of the Anselmo-Merna Coyotes. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Broncos this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 49-44 back in December of 2024.

Mullen's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ben Werner, who posted 16 points. That was a full 35.6% of Mullen's points, marking the third time in a row he's put up more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jacob Walker, who had 11 points.

Anselmo-Merna's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dane Duryea, who scored 18 points along with seven boards and three blocks. Kayden Record was another key player, going 6 for 10 on his way to 15 points and five rebounds.

Mullen's defeat dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Anselmo-Merna, their record is now 7-10.

Mullen didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-49 loss against Maywood/Hayes Center on the 3rd. As for Anselmo-Merna, they and Twin Loup will meet in a dog eat dog contest at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Twin Loup will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Anselmo-Merna surely won't give up without a fight.
