Softball Recap: Masterman Comes Up Short

Masterman extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to six on Tuesday, dropping them down to 0-5. They lost 14-8 to Nueva Esperanza. If the Dragons were looking for revenge after losing 11-5 to Nueva Esperanza when the teams met back in April of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Nueva Esperanza, they pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Considering they have won four contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

For Nueva Esperanza's part, Yedelis Benitez and Gyliani Ortiz did most of the damage at the plate: Benitez went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and five RBI, while Ortiz fired off two home runs, three stolen bases, and four runs while going 3-for-3. Ortiz is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Alesyn Lopez, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.

Coming up, Masterman will welcome Girard Academic Music Program at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Pioneers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 19.5 runs per game on average), something the Dragons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Nueva Esperanza, they will challenge Prep Charter at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
