Baseball Recap: Coconino Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Coconino ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 15-14 win over the Marcos de Niza Padres. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Panthers.

Tate Jones and Fitz Guinan made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Jones tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Guinan struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. At the plate, Jones scored a run while going 2-for-4, while Guinan scored a run while going 3-for-5.

In other batting news, Corbin Derr was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Coconino's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is 4-1 (and 3-9-1 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Steven Stone, who scored three runs while going 3-for-5.

Coconino was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .476. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Coconino's record is now 7-10-1. As for Marcos de Niza, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season.

Coconino will welcome Mingus at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Marcos de Niza, they will head out on the road to take on Cactus Shadows at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Falcons' pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so the Padres' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
