Softball Game Preview: Leyden Eagles vs. Hinsdale South Hornets

The Leyden Eagles are taking a road trip to square off against the Hinsdale South Hornets at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. Leyden is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.

Leyden not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 24, 2024 (when they won 16-0). They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over Proviso East. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.

Arianna Gallo made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

In other batting news, Elise Bertsche was a standout: she went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Brianna Martinez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Leyden always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Hinsdale South lost 15-2 to Downers Grove South on Monday. The Hornets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Tasanee Hilsen was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.

Leyden now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Hinsdale South, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-16-1.

Leyden couldn't quite get it done against Hinsdale South when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 5-1. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
