The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Salem nor Freeburg made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Wildcats sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 victory over the Midgets. The win was nothing new for the Wildcats as they're now sitting on ten straight.
Breanna Thurman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Salem's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jaelyn Keller, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Salem's win was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-2. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.1 runs over those games. As for Freeburg, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Salem will head out to take on Lawrenceville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wildcats are facing the Indians at the right time seeing as the Indians are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Freeburg, they will head out on the road to square off against Newton at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their 17th straight win, something the Midgets surely won't give up without a fight.
