Basketball Recap: Denver East Extends Winning Streak to Six

Denver East came tearing into Saturday's matchup with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 39.6 points), and they left with even more momentum. They took down the Northfield Nighthawks 60-43. That's the third time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent victory being a 75-45 win last Friday.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Denver East to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mairead Hearty, who dropped a double-double with 22 points and 11 boards. Hearty has become a key player for Denver East: the team is 14-6 when she posts at least eight rebounds, but 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Evelina Otto, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Denver East smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 38 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Despite the defeat, Northfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Madison Bethel posted 13 points and eight rebounds. That's the most boards Bethel has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of LaPorsha Allen, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Denver East's victory bumped their record up to 15-8. As for Northfield, their loss dropped their record down to 12-10.

Denver East wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 54-49 win against Eaglecrest on the 1st. As for Northfield, they have also already played their next match, a 74-55 defeat against Riverdale Ridge on the 1st.
