Baseball Recap: Mainland Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Mainland, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over the Orlando Christian Prep Warriors on Friday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 18-4 back in March.

Jordan Payne made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in February. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Helmut Waters and Ryan Allen did most of the damage at the plate: Waters went 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI, while Allen scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances. Allen has become a key player for Mainland: the team is 6-2 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 3-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Angelo Carollo, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Mainland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Mainland pushed their record up to 9-8 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Orlando Christian Prep, their loss dropped their record down to 9-7.

Mainland and Orlando Christian Prep are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Buccaneers will face off against Belleview at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Orlando Christian Prep, they will challenge Geneva at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Warriors' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Knights have averaged an impressive 9.6 runs per game this season.
