Baseball Recap: Central Comes Up Short

Central fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Marion on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 3-2. The Tigers just can't catch a break and have now endured five losses in a row.

Chapman Ogles was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out 15 batters over 7.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Central saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jathan Spain, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Central's defeat dropped their record down to 17-14. As for Marion, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 19-6.

Central and Marion should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in their respective state rankings. The Tigers (ranked 86th) will meet Oak Ridge (ranked 344th) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Marion will challenge Carbondale at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (65 vs. 363). The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Wildcats 3.9, the Terriers 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
