Holy Cross is 0-10 against Newport Central Catholic since April of 2018 but things could change on Wednesday. Holy Cross will be playing at home against Newport Central Catholic at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
As a matter of fact, Holy Cross put up the most points they have all season on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Boone County 10-9. The Indians haven't had any issues with the Rebels recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Sam Addington and David Wilson made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Addington pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Wilson pitched 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. At bat, Addington went 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI, while Wilson went a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. That RBI was Addington's first of the season.
In other batting news, Derric Mullen was excellent, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He also put up a hit, which was his first of the season. Ethan Neal was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Newport Central Catholic made easy work of Purcell Marian on Monday and carried off a 19-8 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Thoroughbreds.
Like Holy Cross, Newport Central Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Henry Brooks. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Brooks was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Parker Hurtt, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was TJ Ruschman, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Newport Central Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Purcell Marian only posted a batting average of .333.
The win got Holy Cross back to even at 2-2. As for Newport Central Catholic, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Holy Cross has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Newport Central Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Holy Cross might still be hurting after the 6-0 loss they got from Newport Central Catholic in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Holy Cross avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
