Basketball Recap: Sumter Takes a Loss

If Sumter was riding high fresh off their 68-21 takedown of West Florence last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Sumter Gamecocks fell 56-44 to the Spring Valley Vikings on Wednesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 86-43 back in January.

Despite the loss, Sumter saw an underclassman step up: freshman Araina Ross went 6-for-15 to rack up 20 points and seven rebounds. The game was Ross' third in a row with at least 16 points. Jayla Thomas also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Lauren Crosland continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Spring Valley, going 6-for-9 on her way to 19 points. Amoura Williams was another key player, putting up ten points and six boards.

Sumter's defeat dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Spring Valley, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season.

Sumter wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 53-34 loss against Blythewood on the 7th. As for Spring Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 61-46 win against Lugoff-Elgin on the 11th.
