Softball Game Preview: Capuchino Mustangs vs. Burlingame Panthers

The Capuchino Mustangs will face off against the Burlingame Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Neither Capuchino nor Burlingame posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

Capuchino is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Hillsdale just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Fighting Knights by a score of 2-1. Mustangs fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Fighting Knights since on Tuesday.

Lola Sierra spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on seven hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Star Gutierrez made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Setaita Mau also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, Burlingame never let their opponents score two weeks ago. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Hillsdale, sneaking past 1-0.

Aditi Bafna looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

On the hitting side, Burlingame's victory was truly a team effort as two different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Madeline Koo, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

Burlingame's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-4. As for Capuchino, their loss dropped their record down to 5-4.

Capuchino beat Burlingame 6-3 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
