Baseball Recap: Maricopa Takes a Loss

Maricopa had lost five straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 5-19 to make it six. They lost 13-3 to the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks. The Rams were not able to make up for their defeat to the Nighthawks from their previous meeting back in April of 2025.

Maricopa saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Travis Varela, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Varela is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

As for Ironwood Ridge, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-6-1 record this season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 14.7 runs.

On Ironwood Ridge's side, Ethan Eynott looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

On the hitting side, Michael Chop and Angel Figueroa did most of the damage at the plate: Chop went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and one triple, while Figueroa fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-4. That's the most home runs Figueroa has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Brody Young, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Looking ahead, Maricopa will square off against Canyon del Oro at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Dorados' pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so the Rams' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Ironwood Ridge, they will face off against Salpointe Catholic at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Nighthawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lancers have averaged an impressive 8.8 runs per game this season.
