Softball Game Preview: Houston Christian Mustangs vs. Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart Chargers

The Houston Christian Mustangs will venture away from home to square off against the Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart Chargers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Houston Christian has three straight victories, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart has 12 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If Houston Christian beats Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart with 19 runs on Monday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Mustangs put the hurt on Cypress Christian with a sharp 19-6 win on Thursday. Considering the Mustangs have won nine contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Millie Metz made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). Metz was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Yazmine Johnson, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Lily Herveat, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Houston Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart's offense. They lost 17-0 to Kinkaid on Thursday.

Houston Christian pushed their record up to 10-7 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.7 runs over those games. As for Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.

Everything went Houston Christian's way against Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Houston Christian made off with a 17-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
