Volleyball Recap: Merrill Takes a Loss

If Merrill was feeling good fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Antigo on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Bluejays fell just short of the Shawano Community Hawks by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bluejays of the 3-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in September of 2024.

Merrill might've come up short, but they didn't make it easy on Shawano Community: every set was decided by two points or less. The match finished with set scores of 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14.

Despite the loss, Merrill still got an impressive performance from Avery Hoock, who had 14 digs and two aces. Hoock is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 13 or more in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Wheeler, who had ten digs and two aces.

The loss snapped Merrill's winning streak at three matches and leaves them with a 12-11 record. As for Shawano Community, their win ended a four-match drought at home and bumped them up to 10-17.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Merrill will face off against Medford at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Shawano Community, they will take on Green Bay East at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
