Basketball Recap: Thursday's Defeat Ends NSU University's Winning Streak

After flying high against Somerset Academy last Tuesday, NSU University came back down to earth. The NSU University Sharks fell 47-38 to the Marathon Dolphins on Thursday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Sharks came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while the Dolphins are ranked 333rd).

Despite the loss, NSU University saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Laly Luque went 6 of 8 en route to 16 points. The match was Luque's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Charlize Coats, who posted six points and six steals.

Even though they lost, NSU University smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Marathon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Elena Eubank led the charge by going 9 for 15 on her way to 19 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Eubank has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last four times she's played. Marti'Yana Kilbourn was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to nine boards and five steals.

NSU University moved to 15-5 with that defeat, which also ended their six-game winning streak. As for Marathon, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

NSU University will welcome Key West at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for Marathon, they will take on Fort Meade on Thursday.
