Baseball Recap: Gilmer County Snaps Three-Game Streak of Losses on the Road

Gilmer County had lost three games on the road, but after bumping their record up to 15-8 on Thursday that streak is in the rearview. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Braxton County Eagles a 7-0 shutout. Considering the Titans have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Kolten Holbert made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. He has become a key player for Gilmer County: the team is undefeated when he allows at most three hits, but 7-8 otherwise. Holbert was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI he has posted over his last 12 matchups.

Holbert wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Lexington Grogg, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base. Those two runs gave Grogg a new career-high. Braylon Mencer was another, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

As for Braxton County, their defeat was their ninth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 5-18. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss they have suffered since April 15th.

On Braxton County's side, Luke Kelly spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up ten Ks. Kelly has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
