It'll be a Battle of the Birds when Master's Academy Eagles duke it out with East River Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Master's Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Last Wednesday, Master's Academy beat Tohopekaliga 10-5. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Ben Soderholm looked comfortable as he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Master's Academy got a big performance out of Cy Smith, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of James Rudolph, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Master's Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, East River won against Boone on Wednesday with six runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. East River never let Astronaut get on the board and left with a 6-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Falcons in their matchups with the War Eagles: they've now won five in a row.
Chance Griffin looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because East River is 4-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 5-6 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Dominic Diorio was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-1. He has become a key player for East River: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Alejandro Medina was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Master's Academy pushed their record up to 12-5 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for East River, their win bumped their record up to 9-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Master's Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like East River struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
