Softball Recap: Robertson Finds Playoff Glory Versus Wingate

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Robertson had no problem doing just that on Wednesday. They blew past the Wingate Bears 15-2. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cardinals also won the last time the pair played back in March of 2016.

Ariana Sanchez and Kylee Griego made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Sanchez pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Griego pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Sanchez has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. At bat, Sanchez went 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI, while Griego went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most RBI Sanchez has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Jayden Ortega was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Paiyten Abeyta, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Robertson was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .517. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Robertson is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Wingate, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-8.

Looking ahead, Robertson will take on St. Michael's at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cardinals' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Horsemen have averaged an impressive 11.6 runs per game this season. Wingate does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
