Basketball Recap: Jonathan Black's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Bessemer City over Shelby

Bessemer City lost against Shelby two weeks ago, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Bessemer City Yellow Jackets fell 80-68 to the Shelby Golden Lions.

Bessemer City lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Jonathan Black, who on his way to 20 points and eight rebounds. That's the most points he has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tristen Gordon, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten assists.

Even though they lost, Bessemer City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Shelby only eight offensive boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Shelby to victory, but perhaps none more so than Grady Morgan, who en route to 18 points in addition to six assists and three steals. Tee Hollifield was another key player, as he made all 6 shots he took for 15 points and eight boards.

Bessemer City's loss dropped their record down to 15-11. As for Shelby, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-7.

Bessemer City wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 80-32 defeat against Corvian Community on the 25th. As for Shelby, they have also already played their next matchup, a 69-61 win against Burns on the 21st.
