Softball Recap: Marshall Beats Meridian for Their 12th Straight Win

Marshall extended their winning streak to 12 on Saturday, bumping them up to 21-1. They were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Meridian Hawks. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 games by seven runs or more this season.

Avery Cornwell made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.

In other batting news, Lauren English was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Lynn Welborn, who went 2-for-4 with three runs and two doubles.

Marshall was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Meridian only posted a batting average of .174.

As for Meridian, the loss snapped their winning streak at six games and leaves them with a 19-7 record. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for they, who until this matchup were averaging 3.5 runs allowed.

On Meridian's side, they saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shelby Renfro, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Coming up, Marshall will challenge Pinckneyville at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Lions 2, the Panthers 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Meridian, they will be playing at home against Williamsville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
