Baseball Recap: Dixie Heights Gets the Win

Dixie Heights lost to Newport Central Catholic on April 1st, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Sunday. The Colonels skirted past the Thoroughbreds 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Colonels have posted against the Thoroughbreds since May 29, 2017.

Will Steczynski and Owen Caudill did most of the damage at the plate: Steczynski went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs, while Caudill went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Steczynski is becoming a predictor of Dixie Heights' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 7-13-1 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Sean Mitchell, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Dixie Heights has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-13-1 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for Newport Central Catholic, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 16-9.

Looking ahead, Dixie Heights will head out on the road to take on Simon Kenton at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Newport Central Catholic, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Boone County at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Rebels have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.85 runs per game on average), something the Thoroughbreds will no doubt try to take advantage of.
