Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McLean County). They won by a run and slipped past the University Heights Blazers 10-9. The high-scoring effort was just what the Cougars needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Ava McCarty made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Abby Walker was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those hits were her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Whitworth, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
McLean County's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7-1. As for University Heights, they dropped their record down to 3-7 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home.
Coming up, McLean County will square off against Muhlenberg County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Mustangs will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Cougars surely won't give up without a fight. As for University Heights, they will host Dawson Springs at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
