Baseball Recap: Canton Comes Up Short

After flying high against Holmes County Central last Tuesday, Canton came back down to earth. The Canton Tigers fell 14-11 to the Greenville Hornets on Thursday. The Tigers haven't had much luck with the Hornets recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Tristian Carpenter was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Jahmad Taylor was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring three runs and stealing Four bases. while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Elijah Kiner, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-4.

Canton suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 5-2. As for Greenville, their victory ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-7.

Looking ahead, Canton will venture away from home to challenge Yazoo City at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Greenville, they are taking a road trip to face off against Gentry at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Gentry has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.4 runs per game on average), something Greenville will no doubt try to take advantage of.
