Basketball Recap: Southern Takes a Loss

Southern fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Mountain Ridge on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Mountain Ridge Miners by a score of 67-65. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Rams have suffered since December 12, 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Southern lost, don't look at Jared Haskiell. Despite the final result, he posted 36 points. Haskiell's evening made it 16 games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Upole, who put up 16 points along with seven assists and five rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mountain Ridge to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ian Duncan, who shot 5-for-6 from long range and dropped a double-double with 19 points and 14 boards. Thanks to that strong game, Duncan now owns an excellent 44.2% three-point shooting accuracy. Owen McGeady was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with nine points and 17 assists.

Southern's defeat dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Mountain Ridge, the win got them back to even at 9-9.

Southern has already played their next game (against GVCS Broadfording), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Mountain Ridge, they will be playing at home against Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
