Basketball Recap: Cara Toledo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cuba over Sandia Prep

After some red-hot attacks on offense in their last three matches, Cuba finally came back down to earth on Tuesday. They took a 43-25 bruising from the Sandia Prep Sundevils. The Rams were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Sundevils earlier this season, when they won 40-36.

Several Rams players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cara Toledo, who posted eight points in addition to six steals and five rebounds. Denale Sandoval was another key player, putting up 12 points and seven boards.

Sandia Prep found their leader in freshman Madlyn Dopson, who went 6-for-9 on her way to 18 points. Dopson is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last six games she's played. Another player making a difference was Maddy Weisler, who had six points along with nine rebounds and five steals.

Cuba's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 12-13. As for Sandia Prep, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-10 record this season.

Cuba didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-30 victory against East Mountain on the 20th. As for Sandia Prep, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 51-23 win against Bosque on the 20th.
