Softball Recap: Thursday's Defeat Ends Cardinal Gibbons' Winning Streak

After a string of ten wins, Cardinal Gibbons's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They fell just short of the Western Wildcats by a score of 2-0. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Chiefs were not able to get on the board.

Lydia Berent spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances.

Cardinal Gibbons' loss dropped their record down to 14-3. As for Western, they pushed their record up to 11-2-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season.

Looking ahead, Cardinal Gibbons will square off against Calvary Christian Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Chiefs will need to watch out since the Eagles have now posted at least ten runs in their last five games. As for Western, they will take on Spanish River at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Wildcats 2.3, the Sharks 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
