Football Recap: Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial Falls to Veterans Memorial in First Game of Season

Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial kicked off their season on the road on Friday and hit a couple of potholes. They were outmatched by the Veterans Memorial Chargers and fell 49-0. While losing is never fun, the Wolverines can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 930th, while the Chargers are ranked 324th).

Nolan Ramirez threw for 56 yards on eight of 13 attempts. Vicente Lopez was his top target, picking up 40 receiving yards. On the ground, Miguel Olvera rushed for 83 yards.

Veterans Memorial's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cesar Belmontes led the charge by rushing for 170 yards and four touchdowns on only 12 carries. Those four rushing touchdowns gave Belmontes a new career-high. Calvin Trevillion was in the mix as well, providing Veterans Memorial with two TDs.

Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 53-10 loss against McAllen on the 4th. As for Veterans Memorial, they will face off against St. Joseph Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
