Highland has gone a perfect 6-0 against East Chicago Central recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Trojans will square off against the Cardinals at 5:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Highland came out on top against Kankakee Valley on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fifth inning. The Trojans won by a run and slipped past the Kougars 8-7. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Trojans.
Cash Washick and Caden Quigg did most of the damage at the plate: Washick got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run, while Quigg went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most RBI Washick has posted since back in May of 2024. Jake Slaven also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when East Chicago Central faced off against Gary West Side on Tuesday. The Cardinals put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 15-5 win. Considering the Cardinals have won five games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Carlos Vasquez and Ivan Rojas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Vasquez tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Rojas tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for East Chicago Central: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 4-5 otherwise. At bat, Vasquez went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run, while Rojas went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
In other batting news, Abran Gomez was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged two or more in each of the last three games he's played. Victor Rivera was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs.
East Chicago Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .562. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Highland's record is now 6-10. As for East Chicago Central, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.
Highland took their win against East Chicago Central in their previous meeting back in May of 2021 by a conclusive 19-0 score. Will the Trojans repeat their success, or do the Cardinals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
