Volleyball Recap: River Islands Comes Up Short

After flying high against Tokay last Thursday, River Islands came back down to earth. The Riptide took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lathrop Spartans on Monday.

The match finished with set scores of 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16.

Despite the defeat, River Islands saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Taray Irving had 13 digs and two aces. Irving is on a roll when it comes to digs, as he's now had 11 or more in each of the last four games he's played. Eric Irving also deserves some recognition as he served his first ace of the season.

Lathrop was led to victory by Mario Luna and Marc Llorin. Luna had four aces and three digs, while Llorin had six kills. That's the most kills Llorin has posted since back in May of 2024.

River Islands' loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Lathrop, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season.

River Islands has already played their next game, a 3-0 victory against Aspire Langston Hughes Academy on the 25th. As for Lathrop, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-0 win against Ceres on the 26th.
